Clip Operations

Move clips between tracks to reorganize your session before anything goes to Pro Tools. Every movement you make is tracked and applied during import.

How to move a clip

1
Switch to the Grabber tool

Press E or click the Grabber icon in the top bar. This enables move mode. See Selector and Grabber for a full explanation of both tools.

2
Drag the clip

Click and hold on any clip. Drag it to the target track. A preview follows your cursor to show where the clip will land.

3
Drop it

Release to place the clip on the new track. The clip snaps into position.

Move via right-click menu

Right-click any clip and select Move to Track. A list of compatible tracks appears. Select one to move the clip without dragging. You can also select Create new to add a new track and move the clip there in one step.

Clips can only move to tracks with a matching channel count. A stereo clip cannot be dropped on a mono track and vice versa. If a drop is not allowed, the clip returns to its original position.

Undoing a move

Press Cmd + Z to undo any clip movement. Press Shift + Cmd + Z to redo. See Undo and Redo for details on the full action history.
