Template Matching

Template Matching maps each incoming track to a Pro Tools template track. During import, the template track is duplicated, preserving its plugins, sends, and routing, and the imported audio is placed on the copy.

How it works

The Template Matching panel sits on the right side of the Import Session Data dialog. Each row in the table represents one incoming track and has a dropdown to select its destination template track.

Dropdown options for each track:

  • New Track: creates a brand new track in Pro Tools with no template applied
  • Available Pro Tools tracks: each listed with its color dot and name. Selecting one duplicates that track and routes the clip to the copy.

Unmatched tracks default to "New Track".

Category defaults

You can set a default template track per category in Settings > Categories and Template (the Template Track column in the category table). All tracks in that category will automatically map to that template track as a fallback, saving you from selecting one by one.

Setting a Pro Tools template

In Settings > Categories and Template, use the Pro Tools template selector to pick a .ptx file. This session provides the list of tracks available for template matching. A clear button (X) removes the current template.

Refreshing the track list

Click the refresh icon in the Template Matching panel to reload the list of available Pro Tools tracks from the currently open session. Use this if you've made changes to your Pro Tools session after opening fPost.

Set category defaults in Settings before starting the import. Tracks are matched automatically, and you only need to override individual tracks that need a different destination.
