Export Module

Favorite and custom prints

A print is fMusic's unit of export: the saved definition of one bounce. It carries a set of tracks, a delivery format (Audio Format), a Mode (Solo or Mute), a range, and optionally its own mix source and audio formats. You build a list of prints, select the ones a delivery needs, and fMusic renders them in one run. The name is optional: an unnamed print renders as Print N.

The Prints list shows two collapsible sections, Favorite Prints and Custom Prints. What each parameter does is covered in Print parameters; unless a print overrides them, its mix source and audio formats come from the project values on the Print settings page (see Inherit vs override).

Favorite prints

Favorites persist across sessions. Delivery specs repeat: the stems a client wants this month are the stems they will want next month, in the same format, from the same kind of source. A favorite encodes that spec once, so in every new session the deliverable already exists and only needs to be selected. Favorites re-attach to tracks by name in each session; a track the session does not have drops out, but the print survives.

To make a print a favorite, use the star in the print editor (Add to Favorites / Remove from Favorites) or choose Save as Favorite Print from the row's actions menu.

Custom prints

Custom prints belong to the session you are exporting: an alternate mix from a specific bus, a one-off client version, a stem with no equivalent in other projects. Build them where you need them instead of filling your favorites with one-offs.

Custom prints do not persist: entering the Export module clears the custom prints left over from the previous visit (only prints created with the global print shortcuts survive). Star any print you want to keep.

Creating a print

Click the Create Custom Print row at the bottom of the list to open the Create Print editor; Edit Print in a row's actions menu opens the same editor for an existing print. It holds everything a print carries:

  • Name: optional; the placeholder shows the automatic name (Print N).
  • Audio Format: 1 file (Interleaved), 1 file (Mono), Individual files (Interleaved), or Individual files (Mono). See Grouped vs Individual prints.
  • Mode: Solo or Mute. A Mute print always renders one summed file.
  • Range: Time, Bars|Beats, or Markers (Suite). Folded by default; with no range set the print renders the whole session.
  • Audio: a per-print Mix source and Custom audio formats, both Suite overrides (see Inherit vs override).
  • Tracks: the session's tracks with checkboxes, plus All and None.
  • Categories: your export categories, which add their tracks and sources to the print (see below).

Create Print (Return) confirms and Cancel (Esc) discards; when editing, the confirm button reads Save Print. A print needs at least one track or one added category. The name is never required.

Automatic favorites

When the factory Pro Tools template (Forte_Template_26) is the loaded template, Export generates four automatic favorites: Accappella, Instrumental, TV Mix, and Full Mix. Each is a stereo, single-file print that captures the matching template bus through an inherited mix source; TV Mix additionally mutes the ALL LV track. They are regenerated every time the list loads, and deleting one is remembered. With any other template, no automatic favorites are created.

Automatic favorites come from the factory template, not from your export categories: configuring a category in Settings does not create a print by itself. Categories add tracks and sources to prints you build in the editor.

Export categories

Export categories are defined in Settings, in the Export pane, and behave according to one global choice, the Export mode:

  • Routing: each category names one bus. A print that adds the category captures that bus directly, so nothing is soloed: only what is routed to the bus ends up in the stem.
  • Folder (Suite): each category names one or more routing folders. They are soloed together and the stem is captured from the main output.

In the print editor, the Categories column lists them with All and None. Adding a category adds its tracks to the print's track list; removing it removes the tracks it brought, unless another added category also names them. A print still captures from a single source: in Routing mode that is the first added category's bus, and a mix source you set yourself always wins.

Sharing prints

The Presets and prints menu in the toolbar moves prints between machines. Export Selected Print(s)… writes the selected prints to a file and Import Prints… reads one back: imported prints arrive as custom prints, unstarred, renamed if a name clashes, and fMusic reports any tracks or mix sources the current session is missing. Export Preset… / Import Preset… move the whole export configuration instead: naming, method, mix source, formats, delivery, destination, and the session's custom prints. Favorites stay in your library and travel only through print files.

Prints per tier

fMusic Intro allows one favorite print and one custom print; upgrading to Studio removes both limits. Under the Intro limits the automatic favorites are not shown, and prints beyond the limit stay hidden until the tier allows them again: nothing is deleted.
