Getting Started

Preparing your DAW

There is almost nothing to prepare. fMusic connects to Pro Tools on its own, reading your session through PTSL (the Pro Tools Scripting Layer, Pro Tools 2024.3 or later) and driving Pro Tools' interface for you. Two things must be true before it can: Pro Tools' interface must be set to English, and fMusic must have the macOS Accessibility permission.

Pro Tools must be set to English. fMusic looks for the English labels of Pro Tools' menus and dialogs, and there is no in-app warning when the language is wrong: the job simply fails with an error in its report. Change the interface language in Pro Tools preferences before running fMusic.

The Accessibility permission

The Accessibility permission is mandatory: it is how fMusic operates Pro Tools' menus and dialogs for you. On first launch, fMusic shows the Allow Accessibility screen ("fMusic drives Pro Tools' interface for you. macOS asks for your permission once.") and waits. Follow its three steps: open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, and turn on fMusic; the Open System Settings button takes you straight to the right panel. As soon as the permission is on, the app continues by itself: no restart needed.

Run fMusic from the Applications folder. If macOS runs it from a temporary copy (for example, opened straight from Downloads), fMusic shows Move fMusic to Applications and asks you to quit, move the app into Applications, and open it again: a temporary copy cannot update itself or keep its permissions.

How fMusic connects

When you start an import, an organize, or an export, fMusic handles the Pro Tools side automatically:

  • If Pro Tools is already open with a session, fMusic reads it directly
  • If Pro Tools is closed, fMusic can launch it for you, in the background, without stealing your focus
  • If no session is open, the flow you are in can open an existing session or create a new one, including from your template

Opening Pro Tools automatically

On first launch, fMusic asks once: Open Pro Tools automatically? ("It starts in the background. Change it anytime in Settings."), with Open Automatically and Not Now. Your answer is remembered, and you can change it anytime in Settings, under General, with Open Pro Tools when fMusic launches.
