How to organize tracks

fMusic organizes tracks at import time. Each file is assigned to an import category, using instrument recognition and your category vocabulary; lanes are then grouped into contiguous category blocks in the order your Settings define, and the import into Pro Tools mirrors that exact layout. The result is a session you read at a glance, instead of tracks in arbitrary file order.

How a track finds its category

Candidates are tried in order:

1. An instrument in the file name. A file called Kick.wav goes to the category that claims the word "kick" in its vocabulary.
2. AI-R's verdict. The instrument recognition model runs on-device and classifies the audio itself into one of ten families: Bass, Brass, Drums, Guitar, Keys, SFX, Strings, Synth, Vocals, Woodwinds. It decides when the name says nothing useful.

A family you have no category for keeps its canonical family name with a neutral gray color. A track that neither the name nor the model can place with confidence lands as Unclassified: gray, and outside every category. Recognition can be turned off in Settings ▸ General with Use intelligent track recognition; naming and categorization then rely on file names alone. The toggle applies to files analyzed after the change.

Category grouping

Lanes are grouped by category in the top-to-bottom order of your category table: all Drums together, then all Bass, and so on. The grouping is applied in the editor and carried into Pro Tools unchanged, so the session you open in your DAW has the same contiguous color blocks you saw before importing.

Import categories are yours to define

Categories live in a table in Settings ▸ Import & Organize, matched from top to bottom: the first category that claims an instrument wins. Each row has:

• A name and a color from the Pro Tools palette, applied to its lanes and carried into Pro Tools
• Elements: the vocabulary words it claims. Every word belongs to exactly one category, so claiming a word from another category moves it
• A destination for the active routing or matching mode
• Strip silence parameters of its own (see Strip silence)

The factory table is generated from the bundled Pro Tools template, one category per routing folder. All of this is configured once and applies to every import. To extend the taxonomy with your own instrument names, open a category's Elements editor and add your own words: a custom word classifies exactly like a built-in one.

Recategorizing by hand

Automatic categorization is a starting point, not a verdict. You can override it per track, in two places:

• In the editor: right-click a lane header and pick a new category from the Category submenu, which lists the categories configured in Settings. The same menu offers Rename Track… and Remove Track, and you can reorder lanes by dragging their headers or with Move Track Up / Move Track Down.
• In the routing table on the Session Settings page: right-click one or more selected rows and choose Change Category. With a multi-selection the change fans out to every selected row.

Changing a track's category recolors its lane, moves it into the new category's block, and forgets and re-prefills the routing destinations of the rows you changed, so the track picks up its new category's default route.
